My Pastor 7-2-12

My pastor, I will not forget,
and wasn't my first choice,
to lead my favorite gospel hymns
with his low, raspy voice.

He couldn't seem to keep a beat
or hit a single note.
He once admitted to us all,
he sounded like a goat!

At times, the sermon, he'd forget.
Sometimes he'd drop his cane.
Most thought he was a special man -
but some, a bit insane.

Though he was sometimes questioned by
his well-intentioned peers,
a wisdom came to flourish from
vast Bible-reading years.

He often had a part-time job,
yet seemed to be around,
to answer all my crazy calls
with questions more profound.

Although he eased my fears and pain,
he had fears of his own.
Because we never heard complaints,
his ills were rarely known.

He sometimes lost his glasses and
the few announcements too.
His pocket watch would sometimes stop.
He fell a time or two.

His clumsiness was obvious,
He spilled his water cup.
Though Satan tried distracting him,
he never did give up.

So preach, he did, each Sunday morn,
through babies cries or cough.
He'd speak awhile and then some more,
'till grandpa dozed right off.

His speech would race, emotions great -
he'd tell us of God's Son,
who had to die to save the lost -
for me and everyone.

Once grandpa 'sawed his logs' quite loud.
Who knew what grandpa dreamed?
Yet pastor never missed a beat.
So futile preaching seemed.

Sometimes I'd reminisce when he
would knock on grandpa's door -
to visit him when he was sick,
then here, dismiss his snore.

But higher still, than grandpa's snore -
his words echoed above.
He'd pound down on my hardened heart
the softness of God's love.

I'll not forget his alter calls,
his passioned plea, to come -
and lay my every burden down -
so Christian, I'd become.

And one thing more I'll not forget,
in sermons through the weeks -
that he loved every one of us -
the proof ran down his cheeks.

My pastor, I will not forget.
He wasn't my first choice.
Delighted, though, I'd be again
to hear that raspy voice.

***

We love you pastor. You're sincere.
Oh, how we all recall,
the many ways we challenged you.
You rose above it all.
There's so much more you did for us.
Compassion you could share.
You've 'walked the talk' so faithfully,
so this begins our prayer...

"Dear Jesus, hear us. Give this man
a very special place.
You'll know him when you see him there -
for he reflects Your grace.
Today, we'll reminisce and miss,
past times that slipped away.
We thank you for our pastor and,
his very special way..."

If Days Could Talk 5-7-11

If days could talk,
what would they say?
What wisdom could we seek?
Listen to each one of them - Day by Day...

Monday says, "Get out of bed!"
as it gives you a jerk.
"Wipe that 'sleep' out of your eyes -
I'm putting you to work!"

Tuesday says, "All is okay.
You've been through this before.
If you could handle yesterday -
then you can handle more."

Wednesday says, "You're halfway done.
You've been through this day too.
Remember all the work you've done,
Reward is up to you.

Thursday says, "Let's plan to have -
an evening of some fun!
Go out and party Friday night.
Have fun with everyone!"

Friday says, "I've got you now -
wrapped around my finger.
Exciting times are just ahead -
so let temptations linger..."

Saturday? Well, here's the truth.
You slept through half the day.
"You did not heed the warning,"
you finally heard it say.

Mistakes were made. You know it.
The fault? Not always yours.
But now, some things will never change.
There are not always cures.

The world really does not care,
if anyone is hurt -
So live each day like Sunday so
more problems you'll avert."

For Sunday says, "Please come to Church.
Your soul is not a game -
and if you know there's more to life -
confess in Jesus' name."

Every Great Decision 6-7-10

Every tough decision is always hard to make -
and consequences don't precede the actions that we take.
If consequences had a voice, in wisdom's veto power -
decisions would be much improved with every passing hour.
The very best decisions, are absent or are rare -
but every great decision is, preceded first in prayer.

Matthew 6 (KJV)

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

The Hourglass 11-2-09

Who begins the timeline,
life's hourglass, brand new?
Excitement grasps first days of life
as grains of sand slip through.

Youthful times surround us.
We lack full wisdom's clue.
We learn to make decisions though,
as grains of sand slip through.

Middle age is stressful
with obligations due -
so we go about our business
as grains of sand slip through.

Oh, to know the answers -
and every facet knew -
so we prepare the answers then
as grains of sand slip through.

With sunset years upon us,
we find God's Word is true -
but still the days flee fast from us
as grains of sand slip through.

Who holds our real value -
and have regrets, will you -
as the hourglass stands empty and
the final grains slip through?

Ecclesiastes 9:12 (NASB) Moreover, man does not know his time: like fish caught in a treacherous net and birds trapped in a snare, so the sons of men are ensnared at an evil time when it suddenly falls on them.

Hallowed Be Thy Name 3-12-09

Our Father, who art in Heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
because you first, so loved the world -
we're changed and not the same.

We once were so dispicable,
like soiled, dirty rags,
but now we wait as loyal friends,
as a puppy's tail wags.

They say that dogs are man's best friend -
trusting pure and true,
so faithfully we follow -
our faith is all in You.

There's nothing we can turn to,
nothing that we own,
nothing we can build upon -
except Your corner stone.

We wait on Your great wisdom,
we live on Your great strength,
and then as faithful servants,
we serve to greater length.

We cannot hold Your love inside.
We cannot live the same -
we must shine bright and tell the world!
Hallowed be Thy name.

What Value? 9-21-08

What value are birds - without their wings?
What value is music - if no one sings?
What value is law - without pursuit?
What value are works - without good fruit?

What value are lungs - without the air?
What value are fathers - never there?
What value is wisdom – if not begun?
What value is Christmas - without God's Son?

What value are scythes - without the weeds?
What value is harvest - without the seeds?
What value are ovens - if not hotter?
What value is clay - without the potter?

What value are baths - without the soap?
What value is grace - without the hope?
What value are answers - without questions?
What value are tears – without confessions?

What value is hope - if we're naive?
What value is faith - if we can't believe?
What value is kindness - without the prayer?
What value are actions - if can’t be spared?

What value are judges - if they aren't fair?
What value is Heaven - if we aren't there?
What value is cycling - without fitness?
What value are Christians - who bear no witness?

Matthew 10:(KJV)
32Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. 33But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.... 37He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. 39He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. 40He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

Matthew 19:(NASB)
29 "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life.
30"But many who are first will be last; and the last, first."

Faith 1-10-07

.
At first my faith was in my mother, and her two loving hands.
But then I had faith in my father, in his wisdom, work and plans.

Then I put faith in the whole wide world, it's size so large and immense;
But then when I learned of its problems, I built up my little fence.

So then I put faith in someone else, I'd know and always agree;
Faith that I had in abundance - was in honest, trustworthy me.

But I couldn't find all the answers, so in others I'd confer;
Because two heads are better than one, we all then should concur.

So I put my faith in our Church, for I started long ago;
And I spent my time in fellowship, but I didn't seem to grow.

As I circled in deep despair, lost in my lonely, selfish groans;
Determined to find something; to heal my ever, fragile bones.

I put my faith in all my works, for without it, faith is dead;
But again I failed in all my works, so looked to grace instead.

And I put all my faith in grace alone - which was the final blow;
As I sat back expecting - but never once prepared to grow.

It never seems to cross my mind, that my chair might soon collapse;
But yet I question God in prayer. Do I trust Him? Well, perhaps....

Age and wisdom has surely proved that I can't do it on my own.
I've always had faith in something else, but now it's in God alone.
